Giorno 2 — Cancun → Coba → Ekbalam → Merida (MX)
American breakfast. Departure to Merida. En route visit to the archaeological site of Coba. Coba is an important Maya site still surrounded by dense jungle, and much of it is still buried. A couple of kilometers from the entrance, in the hot and humid jungle, you will find Nohoc Mul, the Great Pyramid (42 m), the tallest Maya structure on the Yucatan Peninsula. The view from the top is spectacular. Lunch at a restaurant. Continuation to Ekbalam. The fascinating Maya city of Ek' Balam was suddenly abandoned in the 9th century and vegetation still covers most of the archaeological site. The enormous acropolis is impressive, with an artificial base that stretches 160 meters and is dominated by the main pyramid (32 meters). Arrival at Merida. Hotel accommodation. Available evening.
Auto
Giorno 3 — Merida (MX) → Uxmal → Merida (MX)
American breakfast. In the morning, visit to the archaeological area of Uxmal. UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ceremonial site of Uxmal is one of the masterpieces of Maya civilization. Particularly significant are the Pyramid of the Magician and the Governor's Palace, spectacular buildings with fascinating decorative details. Lunch at a restaurant. I return to the city and have the rest of the day available.
Auto
Giorno 4 — Merida (MX) → Sotuta de Peon → Merida (MX)
American breakfast. In the morning visit to Sotuta del Peon. This elegant and beautiful late nineteenth-century hacienda is located amidst agave fields, about 30 km from Merida. You travel back in time, transported by wooden platforms on rails pulled by mules, and witness the transformation process of agave (the "green gold") from fiber to finished product. You also visit a traditional Mayan dwelling, welcomed by the owner. At the end of the tour, you have the opportunity to refresh yourself with an unforgettable swim in the transparent and cool waters of a spectacular cenote, a natural pool in a karst cave, or in the large pool of the hacienda surrounded by tropical plants and flowers. Lunch is served in the hacienda's restaurant. In the afternoon, I return to the city. Available evening.
American breakfast. Departure to the Riviera Maya. Short stop at Izamal. The Yellow City, named for the intense yellow color that covers all the buildings, was in the time of the Maya the city of the supreme god Itzamná. The Spanish conquerors replaced the numerous temples with a monumental Franciscan monastery dedicated to Saint Anthony, the modern patron saint of the Yucatan. Visit to the archaeological area of Chichen Itza. UNESCO World Heritage Site, halfway between Merida and Cancun, Chichen Itza is one of the largest and most complete archaeological finds in Mexico. It is estimated that during its peak period of splendor (10th-12th centuries), this center of Maya-Toltec culture was inhabited by half a million people. Its grandeur is also evidenced by the size of its most famous buildings, which rise on the well-maintained grassy area of the archaeological site: the pyramid El Castillo, the Ball Court, the Sacred Cenote used for human sacrifices, the Observatory, and the Temple of the Warriors. Lunch at a restaurant. Arrival in Riviera Maya in the evening, ending the tour at Barcelo Maya Grand.
