Beyond the Borders: USA & Canada East Coast

New York rises at the mouth of the Hudson River, where the Atlantic meets the eastern coast of the United States, asserting itself as the most vibrant and cosmopolitan of American metropolises. Its beating heart is Manhattan, the island of skyscrapers that holds some of the world's most iconic landmarks. The walking tour ideally begins at Times Square, a crossroads of glowing signs and Broadway theatres, before slipping into the green calm of Central Park, the vast urban lung laid out in the mid-nineteenth century. Nearby, along Fifth Avenue, boutiques, museums and historic buildings line the way: the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the MoMA hold some of the most important collections on the planet. To the south, the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center offer terrace views that embrace the entire city, while the financial district of Wall Street and the moving Ground Zero memorial recount recent history. From the pier at Battery Park, ferries lead to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, symbols of immigration and the American dream. Crossing the famous Brooklyn Bridge brings you to the creative neighbourhoods of Brooklyn, while the High Line, a former elevated railway turned hanging garden, links the Meatpacking District to Chelsea. New York is also a mosaic of cultures and flavours: from the restaurants of Little Italy and Chinatown to Jewish delicatessens, from the food markets of Greenwich Village to the jazz clubs of Harlem. Between avant-garde art, shopping, shows and tireless nightlife, New York is a city that never sleeps and reinvents itself on every corner.

Cape Cod reaches into the Atlantic like a great sandy arm, in southeastern Massachusetts, and is one of the most beloved seaside destinations in New England. The peninsula alternates golden beaches, dunes, historic lighthouses and picturesque maritime villages rich in tradition. Among whale-watching cruises, seafood restaurants and coastal landscapes, it offers a summer of timeless charm. Cape Cod is the iconic seashore of Massachusetts.

Boston rises along the shores of the northern Atlantic, at the mouth of the Charles River, and stands as one of the oldest and most learned cities in the United States, the cradle of the American Revolution and the intellectual capital of New England. Exploring the centre means following the Freedom Trail, the red-brick route linking sixteen historic sites: it begins at Boston Common, America's oldest public park, and leads to the gold-domed Massachusetts State House, Park Street Church and the Granary Burying Ground, resting place of the founding fathers. The trail continues to the Old State House and the site of the Boston Massacre, before plunging into the North End, the city's Little Italy, with its trattorias, pastry shops and the Old North Church tied to Paul Revere's ride. Crossing the river leads to Charlestown and the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. Boston's charm lives on in its residential quarters too: Beacon Hill, with red-brick townhouses, gas lamps and the cobbles of Acorn Street, and Back Bay, with its elegant avenues, the shopping of Newbury Street and Trinity Church facing Copley Square. Across the Charles, Cambridge is home to two of the world's most famous universities, Harvard and MIT, whose historic campuses make for an easy day visit. The city offers the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, while the waterfront Harborwalk leads to the New England Aquarium and the boats setting out for whale watching. The local cuisine celebrates the bounty of the ocean: steaming clam chowder, Maine lobster and fresh oysters in the eateries of Quincy Market. Blending colonial history, prestigious academia and a maritime spirit, Boston pairs European elegance with the pioneering soul of America.

Following the coast, you pass through the picturesque towns of Gloucester, Rockport, and Kennebunkport. Portland rises on a peninsula reaching into Casco Bay, on the Atlantic coast of Maine, of which it is the largest city and the vital heart. Its most authentic face reveals itself in the Old Port, the harbour district where nineteenth-century red-brick wharves and cobbled streets now house art galleries, craft breweries, restaurants and shops. Along the docks, fishing boats unload the lobster that made Maine famous: the lobster roll — chunks of lobster in a buttered bun — is an essential culinary ritual here, best savoured while wandering through the scent of sea salt and the bustle of gulls. Ferries depart from the harbour for the Calendar Islands, the archipelago scattered across the bay that invites day trips among lighthouses, beaches and fishing villages. South of the city, the headland of Cape Elizabeth guards the Portland Head Light, a lighthouse built in 1791 and among the most photographed in the United States, a white sentinel overlooking the ocean. Between art, sea and flavours, Portland welcomes travellers with the rugged, genuine charm of New England. From Portland to the Canadian border, the coast of Maine is particularly picturesque, carved by dozens of fjords overlooking delightful towns such as Rockport and Camden, sought-after destinations for sailing enthusiasts. Bar Harbor rises along the rugged coast of Maine, on Mount Desert Island, welcoming travellers as the gateway to Acadia National Park, one of New England’s most spectacular corners. The town retains the intimate feel of an old fishing and shipbuilding village, with wooden houses, art galleries and a lively waterfront. From here you can reach the summit of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the North Atlantic seaboard, where for part of the year you can witness the first sunrise in the United States. Coastal trails, glacial lakes and granite cliffs invite walking and cycling, while cruises depart from the harbour for whale and seal watching. The table is ruled by Maine lobster, served still warm in the lobster shacks overlooking the ocean.

Québec City, capital of the eponymous province, is the most European city in North America, the only one north of Mexico to have kept its fortified walls, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set on a promontory above the St Lawrence River, it is dominated by the unmistakable silhouette of the Château Frontenac, a sumptuous hotel towering over Vieux-Québec. The cobbled streets of the old town, divided into Haute-Ville and Basse-Ville, enchant with their stone houses, boutiques, cafés and Francophone atmosphere, especially magical under winter snow. The Petit-Champlain district, among the oldest on the continent, and Place Royale preserve the charm of New France. The Terrasse Dufferin offers scenic walks over the river, while the gastronomy celebrates Québec cuisine. Romantic, historic and uniquely characterful, Québec City is a city to be explored on foot, among fortifications, alleys and old-world atmospheres.

The journey from Quebec City to Montreal offers an experience through the beautiful Quebec countryside. Along Autoroute 20 or Autoroute 40, the main highways linking the two cities, we pass through various landscapes, from green hills to open plains, with the St. Lawrence River accompanying much of the journey. Arriving in Montréal, the difference between the two cities is striking: so much Quebec is tied to its religious and military past, so much Montréal appears international, dynamic and progressive. In addition, Montreal is home to world-class academic institutions, including McGill University and the University of Montreal, which contribute to its reputation as a global center of education and innovation.

The journey between the two cities is a short and pleasant one through the province of Ontario and Quebec. Ottawa, Canada's capital, lies on the banks of its namesake river, on the border between Ontario and Québec, and is an elegant, orderly city rich in museums and national monuments. Its symbol is Parliament Hill, with the majestic neo-Gothic Parliament buildings and the Peace Tower dominating the river. The Rideau Canal, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, crosses the city and in winter becomes the world's longest ice-skating rink. Ottawa hosts some of the country's most important museums, from the National Gallery of Canada to the Canadian Museum of History across the river. The lively ByWard Market offers fresh produce, restaurants and bars. Bilingual and cosmopolitan, rich in green spaces and cultural life, Ottawa is a human-scale capital where history, politics and culture meet in a refined and welcoming atmosphere.

The journey from Ottawa to Toronto leads through picturesque countryside, past rivers and small villages. You pass by the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and cities such as Kingston, with its fascinating history. As you approach Toronto, the rural setting gives way to the dynamic skyline of the city, the economic and cultural heart of Canada. Toronto, Canada's largest city, stretches along the shores of Lake Ontario with a skyline dominated by the soaring CN Tower, the metropolis's symbol, from whose top a dizzying panorama unfolds. Cosmopolitan and multicultural, the city is a mosaic of ethnic neighbourhoods such as Chinatown, Little Italy and Kensington Market, where cultures and flavours from around the world coexist. The centre pulses with life around Yonge Street, the Financial District and the Distillery District, with its Victorian brick buildings now home to galleries, cafés and shops. Among the attractions are the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the modern lakefront, from which ferries depart for the Toronto Islands. The city is also an ideal base for reaching the nearby Niagara Falls. Dynamic, welcoming and ever-growing, Toronto is a metropolis open to the world, a showcase of Canadian diversity and modernity.

You follow the western coast of Lake Ontario. Niagara Falls, on the Canadian side, offers the most spectacular view of the famous Niagara Falls, among the most renowned and visited in the world. The imposing Horseshoe Falls plunge with power, creating clouds of spray and rainbows, in a scene of grandiose nature. Sightseeing boats carry visitors to the foot of the falls, while walkways and viewing terraces allow them to be admired from every angle, by day and night, when they are lit with light displays. The town that hosts them offers attractions, casinos, observation towers and a lively atmosphere. Nearby, the wine region and picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake enrich the visit. Thrilling and overwhelming, Niagara Falls is one of North America's most iconic natural wonders, capable of leaving every visitor breathless.

Harrisburg is the capital of Pennsylvania, spread along the banks of the Susquehanna River, a city of rich historical and institutional heritage. Its symbol is the majestic State Capitol, with a dome inspired by St. Peter's Basilica and lavish interiors. The National Civil War Museum recounts in depth the conflict that marked the nation, while the riverfront with Riverfront Park invites strolls. Close to the battlefields of Gettysburg, Harrisburg blends American history, institutional elegance and the gentle Pennsylvania countryside.

Washington DC rises on the banks of the Potomac River, capital of the United States and political heart of the nation, a city of monumental vistas and broad green spaces best explored on foot. Its centrepiece is the National Mall, the long esplanade lining up the symbols of American democracy: the white-domed Capitol, the soaring Washington Monument obelisk, the Lincoln Memorial overlooking the Reflecting Pool, and the memorials to Jefferson, Roosevelt and the war veterans. Along the Mall stand the world-class, free-admission museums of the Smithsonian Institution, from the National Air and Space Museum to the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Nearby, the White House can be admired across the gardens of Pennsylvania Avenue. Yet Washington is far more than its institutions: its neighbourhoods tell another story. Georgetown, the oldest, lines federal townhouses, boutiques and cafés along the C&O Canal and the Potomac; Dupont Circle is the bohemian heart of galleries and bookshops; U Street keeps alive the legacy of jazz and historic venues; Adams Morgan buzzes with ethnic kitchens and nightlife. The capital's tables mirror this diversity, from markets such as Eastern Market to an international dining scene and the local classic of the half-smoke sausage. In spring the city turns pink with the cherry blossom around the Tidal Basin, a gift from Japan and the occasion for the famous Cherry Blossom Festival. Nearby, a trip to Alexandria in Virginia or to Mount Vernon, George Washington's residence, rounds off the journey. Between neoclassical marble, great museums and neighbourhoods of distinct character, Washington DC blends the solemnity of power with the vibrancy of a capital that invites discovery step by step.

Cradle of the American nation, Philadelphia guards the places where the United States took shape: Independence National Historical Park is home to Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed, and the famous Liberty Bell. A city of red brick and cobbled lanes such as Elfreth's Alley, it blends historic elegance with contemporary energy. The scenic Benjamin Franklin Parkway is lined by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, made iconic by the 'Rocky' steps, alongside the Barnes Foundation and its extraordinary Impressionist collection. Don't miss Reading Terminal Market, a shrine to local food where you can taste the city's signature cheesesteak. Lively, cultured and welcoming, Philadelphia tells the deep story of America.
