Patagonia argentina e cilena on the road

Buenos Aires is one of the great metropolises of the southern hemisphere, a city that blends European architecture with a Latin American soul in a unique and unmistakable amalgam. Founded on the banks of the Río de la Plata, the Argentine capital extends for dozens of kilometres through a fabric of neighbourhoods, each with a distinct personality and its own piece of history, culture and everyday porteño life. The historic centre revolves around the Plaza de Mayo, where the Casa Rosada — the famous pink-hued seat of government — overlooks a square steeped in political memory. Nearby, San Telmo preserves a labyrinth of nineteenth-century lanes, Sunday markets, art galleries and milongas where tango reverberates from mid-afternoon. La Boca, on the Riachuelo waterfront, is renowned for the vividly painted tin-clad houses of El Caminito and the Bombonera, the iconic stadium of Club Atlético Boca Juniors. To the north, Palermo divides into elegant sub-districts: Palermo Soho with its design boutiques, Palermo Hollywood with its restaurants and nightlife, and the Bosques de Palermo for leisurely walks. Recoleta is the neighbourhood of grand tree-lined boulevards, French-style mansions and the monumental cemetery where Evita Perón rests, a secular pilgrimage site for visitors from around the world. The revitalised Puerto Madero offers luxury restaurants, a waterfront promenade and the Puente de la Mujer footbridge designed by Santiago Calatrava. Porteño gastronomy deserves its own chapter: the asado is far more than a meal — it is a social ritual; alfajores, medialunas and dulce de leche are fixtures in every panadería. The restaurants of Palermo and San Telmo serve creative cuisine that blends Argentine tradition, Italian and Spanish influences and contemporary trends. Buenos Aires is also a city of theatre, literature and visual culture: the Teatro Colón, one of the world's great opera houses, is an eclectic architectural masterpiece inaugurated in 1908; the Avenida Corrientes concentrates historic bookshops, literary cafés and art-house cinemas. Museums — from the MALBA to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes — hold internationally significant collections focused on twentieth-century Latin American art. A city that never sleeps, Buenos Aires is experienced at night: porteños dine late, dance until dawn, and debate politics and football with equal passion. Every visit leaves something unresolved — a San Telmo alley still to explore, a milonga still to try. That is the spell that keeps travellers coming back.

Ushuaia presents itself to the traveller with a backdrop that is hard to forget: a city of colourful houses clinging to a mountainside that slopes steeply down to the Beagle Channel, at the southernmost tip of inhabited land. Considered the world's southernmost city, it is an obligatory departure point for Antarctic cruises and a place of pilgrimage for those who wish to literally touch the edge of the world. Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, just outside the city, offers trails through a sub-Antarctic forest of lenga and ñire beech, with glacial lakes, tannin-coloured streams and colonies of rock cormorants. The Tren del Fin del Mundo, a revival of a former prison railway, travels a few kilometres of valley in a period atmosphere. In the city itself, the Museo del Fin del Mundo documents the history of the Yamana peoples, European explorers and the penal colony that gave rise to the modern settlement. Activities abound: trekking on Cerro Martial, kayaking in the Beagle Channel among sea lions and Magellanic penguins, and skiing at the nearby Cerro Castor resort in winter. Ushuaia is also a logistical base for those preparing to sail towards the Falkland Islands or the Antarctic Peninsula. The sunset over the channel, with the peaks of the Darwin Range glowing orange, is worth the long journey on its own.

The Tierra del Fuego National Park is located just ten kilometers west of the city. In just a few minutes, visitors go from the hustle and bustle of civilization to a wild calm at the end of the world. The park's 63,000 hectares are bordered to the south by the majestic Beagle Channel. The deep blue of its waters contrasts with the vibrant green of the park's forests. Here, nature resists and adapts to the harshest temperatures. The name Tierra del Fuego is attributed to Magellan. It dates back to when, in 1520, the navigator saw the fires and smoke from the numerous bonfires of the indigenous people from his ship on the coast of Isla Grande, the largest island in the archipelago.

Río Grande is the largest city in Tierra del Fuego by population, located on the Atlantic coast of the main island, around 200 kilometres from Ushuaia along Ruta Nacional 3. An industrial city developed through free-trade zone policies in the 1970s and 1980s, it is primarily a service and logistics centre for the Fuegian province. The Río Grande, which gives the city its name, is renowned among sport fishers for its populations of brown trout and Patagonian salmon.

Puerto Natales stands on the shores of the Seno Última Esperanza, one of the most evocative fjords in Chilean Patagonia, with snow-capped mountains and glaciers reflected in steel-coloured waters. A small town of around twenty thousand inhabitants in the Magallanes region, it is universally known as the gateway for exploring Torres del Paine National Park, the jewel of southern Patagonia. Its streets of colourful wood and corrugated iron conceal an authentic frontier atmosphere, where hikers from around the world prepare for some of the planet's most famous treks, including the W Circuit and the Full Circuit. The waterfront along the Seno Última Esperanza offers memorable sunsets, with the colours of the sky reflected in the silent waters of the fjord and the silhouettes of the Cuernos del Paine in the distance. In the town's restaurants and hosterías, visitors savour cordero patagónico — grilled Patagonian lamb — and centolla, the famous king crab of the southern channels, paired with characterful Chilean wines. Puerto Natales is also the departure point for cruises through the Patagonian fjords, an unforgettable experience among icebergs and cormorant colonies. The town is the beating heart of adventure tourism in Chilean Patagonia and, after every expedition, welcomes travellers back with a genuine warmth that speaks of the end of the world.

From Puerto Natales, you head west across the vast and remote region of Patagonia. Along the way, you can enjoy the untouched beauty of nature and the wide expanses of the Patagonian steppe. Upon arriving at Torres del Paine National Park, you are immersed in breathtaking landscapes of majestic mountains, glaciers, lakes, and valleys. Torres del Paine is Chile's most famous national park and one of the great natural landscapes on Earth: a territory of 181,000 hectares in southern Patagonia where pink granite towers, blue glaciers, lagoons of impossible colours and wind-swept grasslands compose landscapes of primordial beauty. The three towers that give the park its name — Paine Grande, Paine Chico and Paine Torre Sur — rise vertically for almost three thousand metres, and the view at dawn, when the rosy light tinges them gold, is considered one of the most moving in all of South America. The W Circuit trek is the classic five-day route that crosses the most scenic highlights: the Mirador Las Torres, the Valle del Francés with its avalanches of rock and ice, and Glaciar Grey, an immense field of blue ice flowing into the lake of the same name. The park is home to guanacos, condors, rheas, pumas and an extraordinary variety of wild birds. The waters of Lago Pehoé, an unreal shade of blue, reflect the Cuernos del Paine creating a natural tableau that appears in every photograph of Chile. For those who prefer not to hike the circuits, kayaking on glacial lakes, horse riding and cruises on Glaciar Grey offer equally memorable alternatives. Torres del Paine is a place to be experienced with respect and unhurried attention, allowing wild Patagonia to slowly get under the skin.

The route crosses the vast and wild region of Patagonia, with spectacular panoramic views of majestic mountains, glaciers, lakes, and the region’s steppes. El Calafate is the prime gateway for exploring Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that holds some of the most imposing ice masses outside the polar regions. The small town sits on the southern shore of Lago Argentino, in the heart of southern Patagonia, surrounded by wind-swept steppe and a horizon of snow-capped peaks. The undisputed star is Glaciar Perito Moreno: a wall of blue ice up to seventy metres high that advances slowly across the lake, producing thunderous cracks as enormous seracs break off and plunge into the water. The park's walkways allow close-range viewing; those seeking a more immersive experience can tackle the mini-trekking option, walking directly on the glacier's surface with crampons. El Calafate also provides access to the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers, reachable by lake aboard catamarans that glide among icebergs. The town itself, despite its tourist vocation, retains an informal and welcoming atmosphere, with restaurants specialising in Patagonian lamb grilled over open fire, artisan chocolate shops and local craft stores. The best season runs from October to March, when days stretch to twenty hours of light and temperatures remain mild.

Parque Nacional Perito Moreno is one of Argentina's most remote and least visited protected areas, located in the interior of Santa Cruz province, far from both the glacier of the same name and the main Patagonian tourist routes. It harbours mountain lakes of turquoise water, lenga and ñire forests, volcanoes and high-altitude pastures frequented by guanacos and pumas. The complete absence of mass tourism infrastructure and access along unpaved roads make the park a destination for experienced travellers seeking authentic wilderness. Trails are unmarked and the Patagonian wind is relentless: an experience of absolute nature, reserved for those who can move independently.

The transfer from El Calafate to El Chaltén is a journey through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Argentine Patagonia. Along the way, you cross the Patagonian steppe, with its vast open spaces, shimmering lakes, and towering mountains rising on the horizon. One of the highlights of the trip is passing through Los Glaciares National Park. El Chaltén is a small Patagonian village founded as recently as 1985, yet already consecrated as Argentina's trekking capital. Located within Los Glaciares National Park, at the foot of the Fitz Roy massif — the granite spire that towers above the village at 3,405 metres with its unmistakable silhouette — the settlement provides direct access to trails of great beauty, with no special permits or mandatory guides required. The trek to Laguna de los Tres, culminating in the descent to the glacial lake at the base of Fitz Roy, is among the most scenically dramatic day hikes in the entire southern cone. The route to Laguna Torre, meanwhile, offers views of Cerro Torre, the vertical ice tower considered one of the most difficult and legendary climbs in the history of mountaineering. El Chaltén is also a starting point for multi-day traverses and for technical climbers tackling the walls of these extraordinary rock monoliths. The village has an informal, community-minded atmosphere, with hostels, small hotels, craft breweries and restaurants serving excellent Patagonian meat. It is reached from El Calafate in around three hours by road, and the ideal season runs from November to March.

Perito Moreno is a town in the province of Santa Cruz, not to be confused with the famous glacier of the same name (around 300 kilometres away). Located on the Patagonian plateau, it is primarily a service centre for the region and a transit point for those heading towards Los Antiguos and Lago Buenos Aires, or towards Parque Nacional Perito Moreno in the interior. The surrounding landscape is the austere and windswept Patagonian continental plateau.

Comodoro Rivadavia is the largest city in the province of Chubut, overlooking the Golfo San Jorge on the Argentine Atlantic Patagonian coast. Born as an oil city — the country's first commercial petroleum field was discovered here in 1907 — it retains an identity tied to the extractive industry, while offering a waterfront and access to Atlantic coast beaches. It functions primarily as a service hub for southern and central Patagonia.

Puerto Madryn is the main centre of the Patagonian Atlantic coast and the gateway to the Valdés Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations on the South American continent. The city sits on the Golfo Nuevo and was founded in 1865 by Welsh settlers, a community that has left linguistic and cultural traces in the inland villages of Gaiman and Dolavon. The Valdés Peninsula is renowned for its extraordinary concentration of marine and terrestrial wildlife: depending on the season, visitors can observe orcas, sperm whales, Commerson's dolphins and one of the world's largest elephant seal colonies, as well as millions of Magellanic penguins at nearby Punta Tombo. The orcas of Punta Norte, famous for their deliberate beaching technique to hunt sea lions, are a rare spectacle that attracts researchers and photographers from around the world. Puerto Madryn itself offers tranquil beaches, good conditions for diving and snorkelling (the southern right whale can be spotted in the bay from July to December) and a decent selection of seafood restaurants. The city is reachable by air from Buenos Aires in around two hours.

During the journey from Puerto Madryn to Trelew, you pass through typical Patagonian landscapes, with vast open spaces and steppes, and depending on the season, you may spot guanacos and other wild animals along the road. The route follows the Atlantic coast, occasionally offering panoramic views of the ocean. Trelew is the main city on the Argentine Atlantic Patagonian coast in the province of Chubut, founded in 1884 by Welsh settlers — the name itself derives from the Welsh «Tre Lew» (village of Lewis). The connection with Welsh culture is still alive in the cafés of Gaiman, the village a few kilometres away, where Welsh tea is served with traditional cakes and street names still carry Celtic spelling. Trelew is home to the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio (MEF), considered one of the world's finest dinosaur museums, with fossils of Patagonian titanosaurs among the largest ever found on Earth. The city is also the most practical logistical base for visiting the Valdés Peninsula and the Punta Tombo penguin reserve, where the largest colony of Magellanic penguins on continental South America gathers each year.
