Giorno 3 — Dyrholaey → Vik i Myrdal → Skaftafell → Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon → Hofn
Breakfast. We will begin the day with a lovely relaxing walk on the black beach of Reynisfjara. We will then continue towards the little village of Vík and cross the vast Eldhraun lava field, passing the small village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. We will reach the black sand plains of Skeiðarársandur as far as the Skaftafell region, a boundless protected area around the Vatnajökull glacier, known for its natural beauty that is unique in the world. Continuation to Skaftafell. Situated in the southern part of Vatnajökull, Jökulsárlón, "the glacial river lagoon", is an area of incredible natural beauty, where we will set out among the many icebergs dotting the lagoon (30-40 minute excursion on an amphibious vehicle included in the package) and spend some time exploring its surroundings on foot. Dinner at the hotel. Accommodation Hotel Höfn.
Breakfast. Today's journey will take us into the eastern region through the East Fjords, hemmed in between sea and mountains, and along the little fishing villages with which they are dotted. Continuation to Djúpivogur. We will cross its charming centre, where we will make a short stop to fully enjoy the beauty of the small harbour. After that we will pass through the village of Stöðvarfjörður. We will also skirt the Fáskrúðsfjörður fjord before heading inland. Continue to Egilsstaðir. We will end this day with a relaxing dip in the Vök thermal baths (entrance and towel hire included), with a temperature ranging between 36 and 40 °C. The water of these baths comes from wells 1,000-2,000 m deep. Dinner at the hotel. Accommodation Hotel Hallormsstadur.
Auto
Giorno 5 — Egilsstadir → Dettifoss → Myvatn → Akureyri
Breakfast. From Egilsstaðir we will travel across the astonishing desert plateau of Möðrudalsöræfi, characterised by landscapes from another planet. Continuation to Dettifoss. Dettifoss is one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls: the Jökulsá á Fjöllum River, fed by Vatnajökull, drops about 44 meters into the Jökulsárgljúfur gorge. The gray water, laden with glacial sediment, creates a constant roar, visible already from the trails leading to the viewpoints. The waterfall lies in the northeast, between Lake Mývatn and Ásbyrgi, and can be reached via Route 862 on the western side or the rougher gravel Route 864 on the eastern side, depending on conditions. Nearby you can also see Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss. The ground is slippery and the area is exposed to spray: it’s important to stick to the marked paths. We continue towards the Námaskarð solfatara (in a Martian landscape) with its pools of boiling mud, its vivid colours and the steam rising from the ground. We will set off to discover Lake Mývatn and the surrounding area: at Skútustaðir we will make a stop for a walk among the pseudo-craters, fascinating natural formations; at Dimmuborgir we can instead admire very strange volcanic formations that resemble ruined castles. Continuation to Akureyri. Dinner free. Accommodation Hotel Kea by Keahotels.
Auto
Giorno 6 — Akureyri → Godafoss → Akureyri
Breakfast. We’ll start the day with a lovely whale-watching boat trip (included). Continuation to Godafoss. Continuation to Akureyri. Akureyri is a charming town in the northern part of Iceland, often referred to as the 'Capital of the North'. Although smaller than Reykjavik, it offers a lively cultural atmosphere and a variety of attractions for visitors. The city is renowned for its picturesque scenery, surrounded by mountains and with a breathtaking view of the Eyjafjörður fjord. The Akureyri Church, also known as 'Akureyrarkirkja', is one of the town's main attractions. Its distinctive architecture and prominent position on the hill offer a spectacular view of the city and the fjord. Also close to the city centre is the Akureyri Botanical Garden, an oasis of tranquillity with a vast collection of plants from all over the world. The Akureyri Art Museum is another must-see for art lovers, with a permanent collection of Icelandic and international works, as well as temporary exhibitions featuring contemporary artists. For some relaxation, visitors can head to Akureyri's outdoor thermal pool and soak in the warm, rejuvenating waters. Akureyri is also an excellent starting point for exploring Iceland's northern region. Attractions such as Lake Mývatn, with its natural wonders, and the Godafoss waterfalls are easily accessible by car. Dinner free. Accommodation Hotel Kea by Keahotels.
