Beyond the Borders: Lapponia finlandese e Norvegia del Nord

Arrival at Rovaniemi and collection of rental car. Situated right on the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is known throughout the world as the “home of Father Christmas”, but its identity goes far beyond the magic of the festive season.
Santa Claus Village, open all year round, remains an unmissable stop: here you can cross the Arctic Circle, visit the famous post office and soak up that fairytale atmosphere that captivates adults and children alike.
The heart of Rovaniemi is also modern and cultural: the Arktikum Museum, with its exhibitions on Arctic life and the Sámi people, is one of the most important research centres in the North. Almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War, the city was rebuilt according to a design by Alvar Aalto, who gave it a striking layout shaped like reindeer antlers.
The surrounding area is home to endless forests, waterways, profound silence and a natural landscape that changes with the seasons: the Northern Lights in winter, the midnight sun in summer. Lively, welcoming and easy to navigate, Rovaniemi is the perfect gateway to the magic of Lapland.

Recommended experiences:

• Visit to Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle
• Admission to Arktikum, a museum and centre dedicated to Arctic culture
• A stroll along the Ounasjoki River or through the city centre
• Dinner at a traditional Lappish restaurant serving reindeer and salmon dishes.

Overnight in Rovaniemi.

The day is dedicated to exploring Rovaniemi’s most iconic attraction: the legendary Santa Claus Village, where the magic of Christmas lives on all year round. Here you can cross the Arctic Circle, have your photo taken on the famous parallel, and visit Santa’s official post office, where letters arrive every December from over two hundred countries around the world.
The village is a picturesque place, filled with shops, lights, little wooden houses and views that never fail to bring a smile to your face. But there is also a lesser-known side: Santa Claus’s Grotto, an underground space dedicated to the ‘Arctic’ version of the Christmas tradition, complete with light displays and symbolic trails.
The rest of the day can be spent exploring nature trails in the surrounding woods, taking relaxing walks and discovering Lappish culture. Rovaniemi is the perfect vantage point from which to begin understanding the soul of Lapland: calm, silent, vast and surprising.

Recommended experiences:

• Santa Claus Village and crossing the Arctic Circle
• Visit to Santa Claus’s Grotto (Santa Park)
• A walk or short hike in the woods around the village
• Shopping for Sámi handicrafts in the village shops.

Overnight in Rovaniemi.

Leaving Rovaniemi behind, the journey continues south-east through one of the most authentic parts of Finnish Lapland. Just outside the city lies the Jätkänkynttilä Bridge, a symbol of Rovaniemi: its illuminated towers are reminiscent of the old ‘lumberjack’s candles’, a tribute to the forest workers who once brought these lands to life.
The road to Kuusamo winds through vast forests, meandering rivers and villages nestled in the countryside. It is a relaxing, peaceful stretch where Lapland reveals its most intimate side: lakes that suddenly appear amongst the trees, rolling hills and a sense of space that seems to go on forever.
Upon arriving in Kuusamo, the landscape changes: you approach the vast nature reserves of eastern Finland, on the border with Russia. The town is one of the main gateways to the most spectacular parks in northern Finland, and the local cuisine perfectly reflects the nature that surrounds it.
In many restaurants, you can sample typical dishes such as leipäjuusto, a fresh cheese with a unique, slightly ‘crunchy’ texture, and poronkäristys, the traditional pan-fried reindeer meat, served with mashed potatoes and wild berries.
Kuusamo is the ideal place to find peace and breathe in the most authentic essence of this region of forests, waters and powerful nature.

Recommended experiences:

• Crossing the Jätkänkynttilä Bridge on the way out of Rovaniemi
• Photo stops along Route 78, amidst lakes and forests
• An evening stroll in Kuusamo and dinner featuring local specialities
• Opportunities for wildlife sightings in the town’s surroundings.

Overnight in Kuusamo.

Today marks the start of one of the most evocative days of the trip: a long journey through the purest essence of Lapland, taking in legendary mines, secluded valleys and regions where Sámi culture runs deep.
The first stop is Luosto, home to the historic Lampivaara Amethyst Mine. It is one of the few amethyst mines still in operation in the world and is situated amidst the hills of the Pyhä–Luosto National Park. The place is unique: silent nature, the wind rushing through the pines and a mine that tells the story of two million years of geological history. The guided tour takes you into the heart of the hill, where you will discover ancient mineral formations and local legends.
Continuing northwards, you reach Saariselkä, a village surrounded by rolling hills, sun-dappled forests and landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see. Once a land of gold prospectors, today it is one of the main gateways to Urho Kekkonen National Park, one of Finland’s largest and wildest nature reserves. The atmosphere is peaceful, perfect for a break, a stroll or a traditional lunch before continuing the journey.
The route then crosses the Land of Gold, following the course of the Ivalojoki, the scene of the 1870 gold rush. Here lie the remains of Kultala, a village now transformed into an open-air museum: wooden bridges, paths through the tundra and the memory of the prospectors who once braved rivers and forests in search of fortune.
The final kilometres run alongside the valleys of the Lemmenjoki River, which gives its name to the national park of the same name, one of the largest and wildest in Europe. The area is still frequented by gold prospectors and is home to the small Sámi village of Njurgalahti, a base for boat trips and walks through traditional Sámi lands.
Arrival in Inari, the cultural heart of Lapland and a place where tradition, spirituality and nature come together in a unique atmosphere.

Recommended experiences:

• Visit to the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine
• Scenic stop at Saariselkä and a short walk
• Route along the “Land of Gold” and the Ivalojoki
• Option to visit the Lemmenjoki area.

Overnight in Inari.

A day entirely devoted to Inari, the cultural and spiritual heart of Finnish Lapland. Here, nature is vast, silent, almost sacred: pine forests, deep waters and rolling hills that seem to stretch on forever. But above all, Inari is the place where Sámi culture is most alive and present.
At the heart of the visit is Siida, the Sámi National Museum and Lapland Nature Centre. Its exhibitions meticulously recount the history, traditions and millennia-old relationship between the Sámi and the Arctic lands: the rhythm of the seasons, reindeer herding, traditional costumes, symbols and ancient beliefs.
The outdoor trail is equally fascinating: traditional huts, seasonal shelters, and wooden and stone structures that show what life was really like in these remote regions.
Just outside the town centre, Lake Inari — the third largest in Europe — dominates the landscape with its vast expanse dotted with over three thousand islands. One of the most significant is Ukonsaari, an ancient Sámi sacred site dedicated to the spirit Ukko. In summer, you can take part in scenic boat trips, whilst in winter the lake becomes a vast frozen expanse criss-crossed by snowmobiles, sledges and groomed trails.
Inari is also a place where silence takes on a different significance: here the sky is vast, luminous and often streaked with the Northern Lights, which are reflected in the dark waters of the lake.
An intimate immersion in the most authentic Lapland.

Recommended experiences:

• Visit to the Siida Museum & Nature Centre
• Walk along the shores of Lake Inari
• Scenic boat trip to Ukonsaari (summer)
• Snowmobile or snowshoe excursions (winter)
• Northern Lights viewing.

Overnight in Inari.

From Inari, the road climbs gently towards the far north of Finland, through a region where distances seem to stretch out and nature takes centre stage. Forests of Arctic birch, wide, silent rivers, and gentle hills shaped by the ice: here, Lapland reveals its most authentic and unspoilt side.
The route runs alongside stretches of open tundra until it reaches the banks of the Teno, the great border river separating Finland and Norway. Considered one of the purest waterways in Europe, the Teno is famous for salmon fishing and its spectacular landscapes: deep valleys, sudden canyons, and light that changes from minute to minute. It is the perfect place to stop, breathe in the fresh northern air and take unforgettable photographs.
Continuing along the river, you arrive at Utsjoki, Finland’s northernmost municipality and one of the most important centres of Sámi culture. The village overlooks the Teno and retains a cosy, authentic atmosphere, far from the beaten track.
Here, life follows the rhythm of the Arctic seasons: in winter, the sky is crossed by extraordinarily bright Northern Lights; in summer, the midnight sun bathes the landscape in an endless golden glow.
Nearby lies Paistunturi National Park, a vast expanse of hills, tundra and absolute silence, ideal for hiking or simply taking in the views. It is one of the best places to truly appreciate the power, fragility and beauty of this extreme landscape.

Recommended experiences:

• Scenic stops along the River Teno
• A short walk through the Sámi village of Utsjoki
• Exploring the trails of Paistunturi National Park
• Northern Lights viewing (winter)
• Midnight sun experience (summer).

Overnight in Utsjoki.

From the tranquil heart of Utsjoki, the journey continues towards Norway, passing through some of the most remote and evocative landscapes of the entire route. For a stretch, the road continues to follow the course of the River Teno, which flows wide and majestically here amongst barren hills and expanses of tundra. The light changes rapidly, creating almost lunar atmospheres, enhanced by the shifting colours of the Arctic.
Once across the Norwegian border, the landscapes become more expansive and wild: tundra plateaus, glacial valleys, small clusters of wooden houses and reindeer crossing the road with ease, as if the traffic were merely an occasional visitor.
The arrival in Karasjok, the cultural capital of the Sámi in Norway, introduces you to a world where tradition, identity and modernity coexist in perfect harmony. Here stands the Sámi Parliament, an iconic building reminiscent of the ancient lavvu (traditional Sámi tents), a symbol of the political and cultural voice of the indigenous people of the Arctic.
Don’t miss the Sámi Cultural Centre, a place brimming with art, installations, traditional artefacts and exhibits that recount the history, struggles and daily life of the Norwegian Sámi. Walking around the area, amidst colourful houses and absolute tranquillity, one senses a strong sense of identity, rooted in these lands for thousands of years.
In winter, Karasjok is enveloped in a deep blue darkness, ideal for observing some of Europe’s brightest Northern Lights. In summer, however, the midnight sun casts an almost surreal glow over the tundra and hills.

Recommended experiences:

• Scenic stops along the River Teno
• Visit to the Norwegian Sámi Parliament
• Sámi Cultural Centre and cultural trails in the village
• Northern Lights viewing (winter)
• Walks in the tundra around the village.

Overnight in Karasjok.

Leaving Karasjok, the road winds its way into one of the wildest regions of northern Europe: vast plateaus, open tundra, waterways reflecting the sky, and a silence that seems to amplify every detail of the landscape. It is a stretch of road that gives the sensation of travelling through a suspended world, where nature reigns supreme.
The first stop is Kautokeino, one of Norway’s most important and traditional Sámi villages. Here, craftsmanship plays a central role: workshops, small shops and studios display silver jewellery, traditional knives, tanned hides and objects decorated with ancient symbolic motifs.
The culture is deeply rooted, and in spring unique events are celebrated, such as reindeer races or the famous Sámi festival of music and traditions. Even a brief stopover allows you to capture the authentic character of this community.
Continuing southwards, the landscape changes gradually: from the Norwegian plateau, the route descends towards Finnish Lapland, entering a gentler region of dense forests, lakes and rolling hills.
The road leading to Levi is one of the most scenic on the journey, especially in the evening when the low-angled light transforms the tundra into a mosaic of colours.
Levi welcomes you with a completely different atmosphere: lively, modern, full of amenities and activities, yet always surrounded by landscapes that embody the beauty of Lapland. It is one of Finland’s most popular outdoor destinations, with ski slopes, hiking trails, panoramic spas and local cuisine rich in Nordic flavours.
Here, winter and summer offer two completely different experiences: the Northern Lights and snow sports on the one hand, the midnight sun and nature trails on the other.

Recommended experiences:

• Stop off in Kautokeino to explore shops and Sámi crafts
• Opportunity to buy handcrafted silver
• Scenic stops amidst the tundra and Norwegian highlands
• Evening strolls in Levi’s pedestrianised centre
• Relax in a spa or enjoy outdoor activities depending on the season.

Overnight in Finland - Levi.

Leaving Levi, the journey turns south once more, passing through some of Lapland’s most iconic landscapes: coniferous forests that suddenly open out onto wide valleys, lakes that glisten in the midnight sun or appear as frozen expanses in winter, and small villages that reflect the simplicity of Arctic life.
Road 79 follows a route that is perfect for savouring once again the calm and vastness of the North. One of the most beautiful stops is Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park, one of Finland’s oldest and most spectacular parks: rounded hills (the tunturi), pine-scented forests, scenic trails and crystal-clear air.
In summer, the hiking trails offer sweeping views of Western Lapland; in winter, the park becomes a paradise for cross-country skiing, among the most famous in the country.
Continuing towards Rovaniemi, the landscape becomes gentler and flatter. Along the way, you’ll come across small villages, farms and vantage points perfect for a break, whilst reindeer and elk may appear at the roadside, reminding you that nature is always close by.
Arriving in Rovaniemi brings the journey full circle, returning you to the familiar atmosphere of the capital of Lapland, where modernity, tradition and that unmistakable welcoming spirit of the North come together.

• Short hike or scenic stop in Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park
• Break in one of the villages along Route 79
