Giorno 5 — Mikkeli → Savonlinna → Kerimaki → Joensuu
Leaving Mikkeli, the journey continues towards some of the most fascinating places in Saimaa. The road crosses woods, little wooden houses and small villages overlooking stretches of water that seem never to end: this is the most authentic Finland, the one that lives to the slow rhythm of nature.
The first stop is Savonlinna, an elegant town built on islands linked to one another by bridges. Here stands the famous Olavinlinna Castle, a medieval fortress with rounded towers reflected in the lake. Founded in the 15th century to defend the Savonia region from incursions from the east, it is today one of the country's best-loved symbols. Its inner halls, walkways and views over the water tell of centuries of battles, cultural exchanges and Nordic legends. Savonlinna is also known for its summer opera festival, which fills the castle with music and magical atmospheres.
A few kilometres from here lies Kerimäki, famous for being home to one of the largest wooden churches in the world: a monumental, light-filled building erected in the mid-nineteenth century to accommodate almost the entire population of the area. The interior, simple and bright, perfectly reflects Lutheran aesthetics and the skill of Finnish master carpenters.
A short distance away, Lake Puruvesi surprises with the clarity of its waters, so transparent that they are considered among the purest in Finland. On clear days it is possible to see the bottom several metres down, and it is not unusual, with a little luck, to catch sight of the shy Saimaa ringed seal.
The last part of the day leads to Joensuu, capital of North Karelia. It is a young and lively city, built at the mouth of the River Pielisjoki, where cafés, restaurants and local markets bring the centre to life. A walk along the main streets reveals elegant wooden buildings, glimpses of the river and Karelian culture, which is still keenly felt here.
Not to be missed is the Carelicum museum, which tells the history, traditions and identity of this unique region, a natural bridge between Finland and Estonia, Russia and the Baltic world.
