Giorno 5 — Villaggio Malese → Bukit Merah → Penang
After a traditional breakfast at the homestay, at 09:45 you leave the peace of the village and head for the lively island of Penang, crossing the interior of Western Malaysia. The first stop is at Bukit Merah (80 km – approximately 1 hour), home to Orang Utan Island, a conservation centre dedicated to protecting Bornean orangutans. A short boat transfer (departure at 11:15) takes you to the forest island where these primates live in semi-freedom. The visit (approximately 1h30) takes place along a protected tunnel that allows you to observe them close up and to learn about the projects safeguarding this endangered species. You then continue north-west (75 km – approximately 1 hour) to reach Penang, crossing one of the longest bridges in Asia, which offers spectacular views over the Strait. On arrival in Georgetown, the island's historic centre and a UNESCO site, lunch in a typical local food court with a tasting of famous specialities such as Char Kway Teow, Assam Laksa and Penang Rojak, symbols of the rich multicultural culinary tradition. In the afternoon the city tour begins: a visit to the picturesque Chew Jetty, a village on the water belonging to the Clan Jetties, a UNESCO heritage site that preserves the traditional way of life of the Chinese communities. External stop at Fort Cornwallis, the oldest British fortification in Malaysia, built in the 18th century by Sir Francis Light. From its walls you can admire the harbour and the surrounding colonial buildings. Visit to Khoo Kongsi, one of the country's most imposing and ornate Chinese clan houses, enriched with refined wood carvings and architectural details. The route continues on foot through Georgetown's historic centre, among alleyways alive with art galleries, traditional workshops and artisan cafés. You come across Chinese temples, mosques and churches, before reaching Little India, a lively quarter characterised by colourful fabrics, fragrant spices and Indian street food. At the end of the visits, check-in at the hotel and free time to relax or explore on your own. Accommodation The George Boutique Hotel Georgetown.
PLEASE NOTE: Should it not be possible to make the visit to Orang Utan Island because of a drop in the water level of Bukit Merah Lake, the guide will supplement the itinerary with additional visits in Georgetown, on the island of Penang, including the fascinating Thai and Burmese temples.
